Car and vehicle transport
Travel and folding devices
Travel scooters disassemble into sections — typically the seat, battery, tiller, and base — with the heaviest piece weighing 25 to 40 lbs. Most users can load these into a standard car trunk or SUV cargo area without assistance, though some strength and coordination are required. Folding power wheelchairs collapse similarly, with some models folding into a single unit that can be lifted into a trunk.
Full-size scooters and standard power wheelchairs

Battery requirements
Sealed non-spillable lead acid batteries — the type used in most power wheelchairs and scooters — are generally accepted by airlines when the battery terminals are protected and the battery is labeled as non-spillable. Wet cell batteries are typically prohibited. Lithium-ion batteries must meet specific watt-hour limits, which vary by airline.
Device preparation
Most airlines require that the device be prepared for transport as follows: the joystick or tiller must be protected or removed, the battery must be disconnected or isolated, and the device must be packaged to prevent accidental activation. Airlines may require the device to be in a specific position in the cargo hold.
Advance notice
Notify the airline at the time of booking that you are traveling with a power mobility device. Most airlines require 24 to 48 hours notice to arrange appropriate cargo handling. Provide the device’s dimensions, weight, and battery type at the time of notification.
